Excerpt from Finding Our Way Home

Back Into Society

A week later, on April 2, 1998, I left the Transition House and moved in with Nancy. My original plan had been to rent a room in a rooming house. We were talking about it one evening, and she started asking practical questions.

Do you have a television?” “No, but I can get a cheap one at the pawn shop.”

Do you have pots and pans?” “No, but I can find some cheap ones somewhere.” Already, the calculator in my head was adding and subtracting from my little paycheck.

How about silverware?” “Again, I’d have to buy that too.”

She looked at me with that calm, matter of fact Nancy logic and said, “I have four or five TVs. I have a set of pots still in the box. I have about five thousand pieces of silverware. And I have a spare room. Why don’t you rent that from me? Then we won’t have to worry about travelling back and forth to see each other.”

It wasn’t a grand romantic gesture. It wasn’t fireworks or violins. It was practical. It was simple. It was loving. It was the beginning of a life built on recovery, honesty, and the kind of companionship that grows from two people who have already walked through fire.

And that’s how we started — not with promises of forever, but with one day. Today.

When I left the Transition House, I walked out with a small paycheck, a handful of clothes, and a heart that was finally learning how to stay open. Nancy welcomed me into her home the same way she welcomed me into her life — with clarity, kindness, and a sense of humour that kept us both steady.

We didn’t pretend we were starting a fairy tale. We were starting a life. And life, especially in recovery, is built on routines, honesty, and the willingness to show up every single day.

We went to meetings together — sometimes AA, sometimes Al-Anon, sometimes both. We drank coffee with newcomers. We prayed. We laughed. We cried. We learned how to talk to each other without running, hiding, or shutting down. We learned how to disagree without destroying anything. We learned how to love without losing ourselves.

Our programs weren’t just part of our relationship — they were the foundation of it. We didn’t put each other first. We put God first. We put recovery first. And because of that, we were able to give each other something neither of us had ever had: a healthy, honest, spiritual partnership.

Nancy used to joke about her “black belt in Al-Anon,” but there was truth in it. She had boundaries. She had wisdom. She had a way of seeing through my nonsense without shaming me for it. And I had a way of grounding her in the spiritual principles that had saved my life. We balanced each other — not perfectly, but faithfully.

We didn’t make promises about forever. We made promises about today. And every morning, we renewed them without saying a word.

The house became a home in small, ordinary ways. Shared meals. Shared chores. Shared laughter. Shared silence. The kind of life that grows not from grand gestures, but from consistency — from two people choosing each other one day at a time.

Looking back, I can see how fragile it all was, and how strong. Two people with broken pasts, building something whole. Two programs intertwining. Two spiritual paths converging. Two hearts learning how to stay.

It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t easy. But it was real. And real was more than enough.

It pays to pay attention

I was doing some research earlier and an ad caught my eye. It talked about not being able to sleep on your side and wincing in pain when you reached for something on the top shelf. Rotating shoulder cup problems? Yeah, I got that. I read the article attached to the ad. Some doctor had developed a device, the hewelt something or other, that could eliminate that problem, without expensive pain meds or expensive cortisone shots or expensive surgeries. I'm thinking I'm in.

There was a time when I used to google stuff, now I use AI. I asked copilot about this hewelt device. AI seemed to be saying yes it works similar to a tens machine, so then I asked if a tens machine could relieve that pain and it was more sure about that. I thought, hell I already have a Doctor Ho tens machine, I use it to improve the circulation in my legs. It can also be used as a portable unit to relieve pain and increase circulation in other parts of the body. So, I'll be trying that. I used it for a bit tonight and that pain is still there, but it has lessened. the other device claims to start working in 7 days, so I'll use it for seven days and see how that goes.

April 13, 2026

It's the 13th of April already. At least, it's not a Friday. Temperature is starting to rise outdoors during the day. It's raining but that's what happens in April, you know april showers bring may flowers. I planted some bulbs last fall before the first frost. Buttercups. the stalks are starting to poke through so in a few weeks they ought to be sprouting flowers. I do have a dahlia plant indoors and some sweet basil. I'm getting a few more pots because I have lettuce, kale, spinach, and broccoli and I will probably pick up dill, parsley, maybe a few other herbs. I want to put them in pots so I can tell them apart once they start growing.

I'll likely pick up some more flowers for the garden itself, to add some color to the place. It may be too soon to tell, but I might have scared away the rodents. A friend of mine suggested putting a trickle of pinesol around the perimeter of the trailer. I tried that and strangely, I haven't seen any. Time will tell.

This summer, I'll need to paint the deck and power wash the siding and skirting. It's getting cruddy in spots. Need a new screen door and the roof needs some work. I'm retired so what the heck.

I don't think this blog needs to be updated daily. I have the God Box which is updated every day. So if you don't see regular updates here it isnt because I forgot.

April 2, 2026

On April 2, 1998, I moved out of the transition house where I was living and attempted to re-integrate back into society. I think I was successful.

I had something on my mind during the night so I ended up waking up early. My word for the day was about the practice of self-restraint and not acting or speaking hastily or rashly which is what I was thinking of doing. Go figure.

One of my sponcees had asked if I wanted to accompany him to the early risers meeting. I am an early riser today so thats what I'll do today.

April 1, 2026

Today is April 1. April Fools day. It's also the day Nancy and I stopped smoking, 9 years ago. It's not something I miss. Oh sometimes I think I miss it but then I ask myself what do you miss? The cyanide? the formaldehyde, the carbon monoxide? the paint thinner? the pieces of hair I used to find in tobacco, the yellow fingers? smelling like an ashtray all the time? And then I realize that I don't miss it.

March 31, 2026

March came in like a lion, and seems to be going out like a lamb. Suits me just fine. I'm speaking at a birthday meeting tonight so that might be a good reason to wear a buttoned shirt.

Both my morning and my afternoon sessions canceled so that will give me more time to bake cookies.

March 30, 2026

Monday morning. Having a cup of coffee and listening to Benny Goodman, an album from 1937. I decided to play one album for each year from the last 100 years.

March 29, 2026

It's Sunday again. Not very much going on. Church in the morning which includes coffee hour after church. I made some cookies for that. No committee meetings or workshops in the afternoon, but I do have my usual sponsorship session early this evening and the Living Sober meeting at 8.

March 28, 2026

One of my sponcees is celebrating at the early risers meeting today. Another one is coming with me today to do some step work, I'm chairing an al-anon meeting on zoom this afternoon, planning a romantic dinner with my wife. Typical saturday here.

March 27, 2026

Pay day already. Took care of the monthly bills and while I was at it, I paid my registration for a service weekend I'm attending in Truro this May. Just having a coffee now so I don't have to beat up anyone who gets in my way in the grocery aisles today.

March 26, 2026

It was a month ago today that facebook accused me of violating their precious community standards. My immediate punishment, without trial I might add, was to suspend my account for three days and on top of that to put my profile at risk of deletion for thirty days. Apparently, at 230 or 300 pm they will turn the algorithm's gaze to someone else, hopefully to one of those prostitutes who call themselves content creators or maybe to the trump-bashers, who knows who they will put under the gun this time.

Looks like we're going to 2 meetings today. The noon meeting for starters and then to a birthday meeting at gaston. I might bring cookies to that one.

March 25, 2026

It's just another day here. I woke up at the usual time, did my readings and picked the word of the day. Shared it with all the people I share it with. It's wednesday so I uploaded  my podcast. Doesn't seem to be anything else to do today. Well, we will be attending a celebration of life this evening for the other Bernie from Hawaii, but that's not until 7 o'clock.

March 24, 2026

Yesterday was the anniversary of my first date with Nancy but today is actually the day I asked her to spend her life with me, 28 years ago. One day at a time we have been doing it.

I meet with two sponcees today and one of my sponcees who has been in treatment in Ontario comes home today so it will be good to see her.

Home group meets tonight. Birthday night is next Tuesday.

March 23, 2026

It was 28 years ago today that Nancy and I had our first date. It wasn't supposed to be a date but looking back at it, it definitely was a date. each year we try to relive it. We might have a problem this year because of the snowstorm, but there will be other anniversaries, God willing.

March 22, 2026

Sunday today. A fairly eventful day for me. We always go to church on Sunday morning, but today will have special significance because Nancy will be baptized and confirmed and I will be confirmed. I was baptized when I was 5 months old. If I had stayed in the church until I was 13, I would also have been confirmed. Alas, I left when I was 12, joined the local street gang and forsook all the teachings of the church. I only recently started going back to church so I am going to renew my faith and getting confirmed is part of it.

There is an AGM at the church after today's service so we plan to attend some of that. We won't be able to attend all of it because the wrap-up meeting for the midwinter roundup is also this afternoon at one and since I am the outgoing chair of that, my presence is needed.

Then, I have my usual sponsorship session at 7 and and online meeting at 8, so yes eventful sounds about right.

March 21, 2026

Saturday has arrived. It snowed last night but only a light dusting which ;ater turned to rain so that's a good thing. I don't have much to do today but tomorrow I have a lot to do abd I did not want the weather to hamper any of it.

We go to church as usual and during the service Nancy will be baptized and we both will be confirmed. I was already baptized but I left the church when I was 12 so I missed being confirmed. Going to take care of that tomorrow.

Then, the church as its annual general meeting and I'll try to take in a bit of that but I will have to leave before its over because the final committee meeting for the midwinter roundup is also tomorrow at one and since I'm chair of that committee, well I kinda have to be there.

But that's all tomorrow.

March 20, 2026

They tell me it's Friday. When you're retired all days are like the weekend. I usually meet up with a fellow for a book study but he is  visiting his mother this weekend and asked if we could skip today.  I think family visits are good and the book will still be there next weekend.

Our other big book meeting - Serenity Corner - is tonight. I always look forward to that.

Rest of the day looks like video games.

Thursday, March 19, 2026

March 19, 2026

It's Thursday. Couple things going on today. The men's lunch is today, at my church. There is an archivist committee meeting and there's a meeting at St. Luke's that I'll probably go to. That's the plan anyway. I can make a plan; I just can't plan the outcome of said plan.

March 18, 2926

Wednesday. Hump day as they say, because its the middle of the week when you can almost see the weekend humming in the distance. Weather doesnt look too bad. and I don't have much of anything on the horizon.
